Project Management: Learning and Leading From Best Practices in IT Project Management

Digital Transformation, IT Consulting, Project Management, Enterprise Software

Executive Summary

During my Emerging Technologies Internship as part of the MITB – Digital Transformation Jan 2023 Intake, I contributed to a harmonization and implementation project of Oracle and SAP enterprise software for a global logistics company. This initiative aimed to streamline revenue management processes, improve scalability, and enhance financial compliance. Under the guidance of my counsellor and offshore project managers, I led over 90 System Integration Testing (SIT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and change management initiatives, ensuring a smooth transition to the new system.

The Client

The client, a 200-year-old logistics enterprise operating in over 40 countries, faced significant challenges in managing its complex billing structures. Revenue leakages stemmed from unstructured rate variations across corporate and contractual agreements. The legacy system was not scalable, making it difficult to standardize and efficiently map diverse rate structures. Implementing a modernized enterprise software solution was critical in resolving these inefficiencies and positioning the client for future growth.

The Solution

  • Automation of billing processes, reducing manual errors and inefficiencies.
  • Comprehensive rate mapping, covering hundreds of variations to ensure accuracy.
  • Seamless integration with existing ERP systems, enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Scalability and transparency, ensuring compliance with corporate agreements and regulatory standards.

The Outcome

  • Captured an additional $100,000+ in monthly revenue, by eliminating revenue leakages.
  • Enhanced contractual compliance, ensuring adherence to corporate agreements.
  • Streamlined reporting and auditing capabilities, supporting better financial decision-making.

This success highlights the ability of modern enterprise software solutions to deliver ROI-driven improvements, resolving inefficiencies that had previously hindered the client’s financial operations.

Reflection

This internship provided a transformative learning experience, reinforcing my ability to solve complex problems in digital transformation. My MITB education, combined with my background in accounting and finance, enabled me to contribute effectively to this initiative. Throughout the project, I honed critical skills in DevOps, PMO, stakeholder communication, and change management, all of which will be instrumental in my future IT consulting career.
